Lance was too much of a professional to show any expression other than professional concern but his hazel eyes danced with barely concealed amusement as he settled himself into a couch that was as ugly as it was comfortable.
Keith was in fine form today. The commander was pacing around the confines of his office, muttering obscenities under his breath and pulling at his hair, something he only did when he was particularly stressed.
Trichotillomania. Lance remembered the formal term for Keith's nervous affliction. Tilting his head to one side, he eyed Keith with narrowed eyes, trying to imagine his friend with bald patches. He immediately wished he hadn't. The image made him shudder. A distraction was necessary.
One would think that the coffee table in front of the couch would have what he needed, but Keith's coffee table was covered with used coffee mugs, papers and books. Frak. Not exactly what he had in mind, unless he was planning to bore Keith to death.
Ah well, desperate times call for desperate measures. Lance channeled nails on chalkboard affected the most annoying tone he could manage. "Dude, your feelings for Allura are showing. You wouldn't be this upset otherwise."
As he expected, Keith stopped in his tracks and threw a withering glance his way. "Stuff it, Lance. This isn't about my feelings... you know I don't feel like most people, right? We need to talk some sense into Allura. What she did was unacceptable. She's the fraking Princess Royal. The only heir Arus has got!"
Lance nodded in agreement even as he wondered what the psychologists at Garrison would say if they saw the commander now. Almost all of Keith's assessments mentioned how he was driven by evidence and logic, with very little regard for his feelings.
It was not surprising that the Keith and the Princess often had differences of opinion. Allura was an idealist. She consciously chose to see the potential for good in everyone. She was also as stubborn as hell and more courageous than she should be. Allura was hope incarnate, candlelight in the dark and those closest to her were deathly afraid of the ephemeral nature of her light.
Lance bit back a smile at his friend's dilemma. Worry for the Princess had Keith all tied in knots. The commander wouldn't be this upset otherwise.
With any other member of the Force, Keith could simply issue orders and expect them to be obeyed. It was different with Allura. The authority structure between was so skewed that neither of them could figure out who should command whom. It didn't help that the feelings that Keith denied he had were becoming more and more obvious.
It was a classic case of an irresistible force meeting an immovable object, Lance thought when something occurred to him... Keith didn't deny having feelings for Allura!
Wow. This was an interesting turn of events.

Without a sound, castle control was suddenly plunged into darkness. Keith reached out, pressing buttons on the console before him, trusting his memory to lead him to the right ones. When nothing happened, he swore under his breath.
A quiet hiss broke the near silence and was followed almost immediately by a bright flare of light that quickly resolved itself into a small flame. Allura held a candle before her, providing a soft flickering illumination to their small portion of the cavernous space. Keith turned to face the princess and froze. The sparkling candlelight danced in her eyes, brought out a subtle glow in her skin and he suddenly found himself speechless, his mouth utterly dry.
She blinked, tilting her head and searching his eyes in concern. "Keith? Are you alright?"
He nodded, gulping quickly. "Yeah," he whispered, "I'm fine." His eyes explored her face and when a slight shift in the air currents sent a few stray tendrils of hair fluttering onto her cheek, he swallowed hard.
Her brow furrowed, the shadows exaggerated by the small flame lighting the room. "What is it?" she pressed, unsure how to interpret his unusual behavior.
"I've..." he started, his voice fading into silence.
"You've what, Keith?" Allura took a step closer, growing worried.
"Huh?" he breathed, his eyes shifting to find hers.
She met his gaze steadily, her concern escalating.
"You..." he whispered.
"Keith, you're not making any sense."
His eyes lowered to her lips, mentally tracing their lines and curves. Without thinking, he reached out, one finger following the same path his gaze had just completed. Allura's breathing quickened in response to his touch. Her heart pounded in her chest.
A slight flicker of the candle tore her attention from the man before her to the danger presented by the open flame. She carefully placed the burning candle onto the surface of the console, taking a moment to study it and settle herself again before turning back to Keith.
He closed the small distance between them, his eyes roaming her face once more. She could feel the heat of his gaze as it moved from feature to feature, burning a path along her skin. "Keith?" she questioned again softly.
He didn't reply. Instead he leaned in further, his breath moist and warm against her lips. She watched as his eyes drifted closed, her own following suit as his mouth met hers. They didn't move for a few heartbeats, just stood there, lips pressed together gently. When the embrace ended, he smiled at her shyly, the candlelight masking his blush with its ruddy hue.
"What brought that on, Keith?" Allura asked quietly. "Not that I'm complaining," she finished, her words coming out in a rush.
"I'm not sure, exactly. I just suddenly saw you in a whole new light..." Keith breathed, leaning in for another kiss.
Allura obliged him gleefully. Thus occupied, the couple didn't notice when the lights came back on or when Lance and Pidge slipped from the room.

Hunk pressed himself against the wall of the castle parapet, waiting for his signal.
Of the all the clandestine missions he'd been tasked with, none had carried this particular brand of pleasurable peril. The heart pounding anticipation went far beyond a dare to be sneaking out after curfew, and what felt like a flock of swallows fluttered in his midsection at the thought of what was about to go down.
Forbidden books. A decadent gift of cake. Furtive exchanges of emails.
All of them had built a staircase to a rendezvous with the Princess.
Was it a fool's mission? One slip up would lead to a lifetime of teasing and ill-timed reminders.
He didn't care.
A shared love of books brought its own rewards.
He peered up into the velvety darkness.
A pinpoint of light appeared, flickered, grew stronger. Still he waited, unconsciously holding his breath, his large hands clutching the dog-eared copy of 'Galactic Seduction' that he'd been ready to critique in full for the past month.
And there it was. Twin flames of candlelight, beckoning him to come hither.
A rope descending to his hiding spot, confirming that all systems were go.
Tucking the book inside his vest pocket, Hunk grabbed hold of the rope. Muscles straining, he hauled himself up to her balcony.
When at last he clambered over the rail, he was welcomed by Allura's lovely smile and outstretched hand.
Yep. Totally worth it.

Candlelight filled the church, creating a soft, flickering warmth in the ancient stone building. Princess Allura knelt before the alter, head bowed and hands clasped, lips occasionally moving as she offered up her silent prayers.
From a nearby pew, her escort watched, seemingly mesmerized by the tranquility of it all. Not for the first time, Keith considered the strength of her faith; a faith that allowed for perseverance in even the darkest of times. The Princess of Arus had, time and again, lost so much, so many of those she loved and cared for, and yet she never wavered. She knew that what was righteous and good would win out over what was evil and wrong.
Coming here nearly once a week for the past two years, he had considered what gave her that conviction and he thought he had finally figured it out.
Allura's soul was filled with light. She was goodness, she embodied righteousness. They were all so very lucky to know her; he was so very lucky to know her. She gave him strength when he thought he had none left, hope when all seemed impossible. She believed in him when he didn't believe in himself, seeing a man who was worthy of all good things.
Her movement caught his attention; she crossed herself one last time before standing up and dusting off her knees. When she turned to face him, tears shimmered in her eyes, but she offered up a bright smile anyway.
"Are you ready to go home, Keith?"
"Whenever you are, Princess."
At her nod, he stood and hurried to the door, opening it and telling the guards waiting outside to bring their horses. Keith watched as she flipped her cloak around her shoulders before coming to wait with him. He felt a stirring deep in his heart, a feeling he'd felt many times before when she was near.
Someday soon he was going to have to tell her just how special she was.
