"Just sit for the exam."
"It's my last chance."
"Yep."
"If I fail this, it means remediation."
"Yep."
"And I lose the bet."
"Yep."
"Maybe I don't need a promotion."
"Yep."
"Maybe, I. . . hey, did you just say 'Yep' to my not needing a promotion?"
"Yep."
"Are you even listening to me?"
"Yep."
"Is that all you are going to say?"
"Yep."
"I think I deserve a promotion, don't you?"
"Yep."
"I mean, besides being good-looking, a chick-magnet, I am an amazing pilot."
"Yep."
"In that last battle, it was my ingenuity on melting the RoBeasts eyes with my lava blast that saved the day."
"Yep."
"And before that, when we infiltrated Zarkon's castle, I made that nearly impossible shot to take down the guard that had you dead to rights."
"Yep."
"And of course, we all know who the princess really loves. Sure, she looks at you with those googly eyes, and follows your ever word as gospel, but really, she does it as a cover for her feelings for me. Of course, who could love me? I am handsome, smart, a great. No! An AMAZING pilot, and I can hit a dart board backwards over my shoulder at 20 paces."
"Yep."
"That's it! I am sitting for the Captain's exam. I am going to ace that damn exam with the highest grade ever, present company excluded, of course."
"Yep."
"Then I will have my bars, and all the girls will swoon in delight at my magnificence. Of course, I will be humble. 'Yes, I worked hard for the honor of serving with Garrison as one of their Captain's.' 'No, I am not the youngest Captain in the fleet, but one of the youngest to ever sit the exam with such a high score.' 'Well, yes, I did score the highest in history on the exam. But it was only a matter of study.' That is what my humble self will say to all the lovely ladies."
"Yep."
"Ok, schedule the exam. I am going to go and study! Yes, that is what I am going to do. Watch me ace this one on the first go!"
Keith watched as Lance kept talking to himself as he walked out of the room, shaking his head. It always amazed him how he could talk himself into anything.
"Is he gone?"
"Yep."
"He was totally oblivious to my presence, right?"
"Yep."
"Is that all you have to say?"
"Yep."
"Well, you are going to play the strong silent type?"
"Yep."
"Hmmm, you must be saving your tongue for other uses?"
"Yep."
"Then maybe you should follow me?"
"Yep!"
Keith stood and followed the beauty in front of him as she walked out the door, smiling. Sometimes it paid to keep one's words to a minimum!

"All right, you maggots, listen up!" The instructor bellowed as he strode through the lines of desks. "It's time for your annual exam on all things Doom. We expect you not only to be up on current events, but you should have a working knowledge of our history as well. Anyone who fails will be automatically enrolled in the re-education course and will remain there until they pass a second exam! Do you understand?"
"Yes, Sir!" The soldiers yelled back in unison.
"On my command you will flip your papers over and begin. You have one hour to answer all the questions. At the sound of the chime you will stop writing and turn your papers in. Anyone caught trying to cheat will be punished! Begin!"
Garn sighed heavily as he read the first question. He didn't understand the necessity of the exam. None of it was relevant to any of his military duties and most of the subjects covered didn't even come up in casual conversation. Yes, he knew the year in which King Zarkon ascended the throne of Doom. But what did that have to do with defending said throne from an invading force? Was it a taunt he was expected to yell at the enemy before opening fire?
He stole a glance at his friend Kyle in the next seat over. If Garn didn't see the merits of taking a test on things which weren't important to his military duties, Kyle was doubly so. At the moment, he appeared to be nodding off. Garn reached across the space between the two of them to prod him with his pencil. Kyle gave a start, cast a look around the room and begin to write enthusiastically. After ten minutes he seemed to grow bored and used one of his extra sheets to make a paper airplane, which he set to flight as soon as the Captain's back was turned. He yawned and stretched, twiddled his thumbs, nodded off again. When the hour was nearly up he didn't bother to re-check his answers and when the chime sounded he fell in line to toss his exam paper on the Captain's desk without hesitation.
Much later, the results were announced. Garn was relieved to pass with a "B". It was actually better than he'd done last year. When Kyle shared his grade, Garn's mouth dropped open in surprise.
"A plus? You got an A plus? I don't get it - you slept through half the test! How could you get a grade like that?"
Kyle shrugged and handed Garn his paper. Garn began to read aloud:
"Who is the Emperor of Doom? Hail Zarkon. In what year did Zarkon ascend the throne? Hail Zarkon. What's the name of the Emperor's son? Hail Zarkon." He tossed the paper in mock disgust. "That's it - I'm defecting to Arus!"
Kyle gave him a wide grin. "If you do, just remember - the answer for their exam is always " 'Long Live Princess Allura'."
"Yes, Sir!" The soldiers yelled back in unison.

Lisa rushed along the corridor to the vestibule and the main staircase. Strands of her black hair, set free by the fallen pins, puffed this way and that in the breeze she created as she ran. Yet, even if she had taken note of her dishevelment, it didn't matter to her now, nothing mattered at the moment but getting to class on time.
Without so much as a pause in her stride, Lisa caught at the newel post with her left hand and spun herself from the marble floor of the vestibule up onto the staircase and directly into the behind of a cadet who had paused on the third step to tug the sleeves of his tunic into proper position.
"Oops!" Lisa gasped, at last taking note of her surroundings.
The cadet turned and gazed down at her with one dark eyebrow lifted in silent question.
"I'm sorry," Lisa managed to say, though she was quite out of breath. "I was- I didn't see you until I turned up the staircase and-"
"You didn't see me?" asked the cadet in a strange accent. "And here I thought I was big enough to be seen in such a tiny staircase like this."
"Are you okay, Lisa?" Keith asked solicitously, who stood above the cadet on the staircase.
"Yes, thanks," she replied. "I'm fine. I was in a great rush to my Astrodynamics exam and didn't expect that anyone would be- I mean, induction is long over and all cadets-"
"I arrived late," the boy replied, his eyes gleaming with humor. "There is so much to see in this academy..." His gaze lingered on her with such intensity that Lisa couldn't help blushing.
Keith coughed softly, and Lisa looked up to see her friend pantomime the straightening of her hair. "Oh my," she murmured, suddenly feeling the loose strands teasing at her cheeks and neck. "I must be a mess."
"Ja," the stranger said enigmatically. "A veldig vakker mess." (Very beautiful)
Two steps above the stranger, Keith grinned at her. "Lisa, this is Sven Holgersson," he inserted rapidly. "Sven, this is Lisa Haruka."
"Oh!" she gasped. "You're the Norwe- I mean- you're the cadet that came with the European Space Academy Committee."
A smile appeared onto his face- appeared so slowly that it forced Lisa to watch it as it teased his lower lip, tugged at the corners of his mouth until it reached into the blue depths of his eyes.
"Nice to meet you, Lisa," he said. "Can I accompany you?"
"No! I mean- thank you but I have to get to class before Commander Hawkins closes the door..."
"I can wait for you outside the classroom."
Lisa could not withdraw her gaze from his, feeling there was a secret connection with them.
But then she sighed softly at her own vivid imagination, glanced away from the intriguing new cadet to a smiling Keith, and nodded. "Okay, Sven."

The Voltron Force members stared at Nanny incredulously.
"That's a joke, right?" Lance finally asked.
"Of course not!" Nanny huffed, "Whenever there is no secured succession to the throne, a test is being established to create that situation."
"But there is an heir. The princess," Pidge complained.
"One princess doesn't make a secured succession. Why do you think I urge her constantly to finally marry a prince and give the planet an heir, while she becomes queen?" Nanny asked.
"But surely there are exceptions being made in cases like this. I mean, it's hardly Princess Allura's fault that Zarkon killed her family and left her all alone," Hunk protested.
"The re-established council of nobles has decided that Princess Allura has been given enough time to find a proper suitor herself," Nanny stated.
"The fact that she's fighting for the planet constantly, defending her people as part of the Voltron Force doesn't count?" Lance asked.
"A princess shouldn't risk her life like that. She has a duty to her people to provide an heir."
"And this exam, what does it entail?" Keith asked with a frown.
"Well, all kinds of things. It's like the old trials for the Arusian Lions. Simply because, in this case, we need to find a proper king for the planet. If only the princess hadn't been stubborn, then this wouldn't have to happen."
All the men frowned. They all were disgusted by the idea that some man that won those exams would become Allura's husband, simply because some stuck-up nobles decided for it to happen.
"Who will participate?" Lance asked.
"I expect nobles from all around to come to prove their worth," Nanny gushed.
"Is anybody excluded from trying?" Hunk asked, "I mean, I don't want Lotor to get ideas."
"Theoretically nobody is excluded no matter their heritage, but criminals are banned from claiming that honour. And Lotor, as you will agree, has committed countless crimes," Nanny assured them.
Keith had a glint in his eyes. Nobody was excluded? That could work in his favour.
"Are there any old documents about the former trials of the Arusian Lions? It would be good to know what to expect when the exams take place," Keith asked, not showing his true intentions, even if Lance gave him a certain look.
"Of course. All the historical documents of Arus were secured in an underground bunker when it became clear that attacks from Zarkon wouldn't stop anytime soon."
"I will look it up to work out the best procedure for the exams then. Security and so on," Keith promised.
"Thank you, Commander. I don't want this to embarrass Arus in any way," Nanny declared and left the room, leaving the men behind.

After Nanny had left them, Lance turned to his commander and best friend.
"Keith?" Lance asked.
"This is a perfect opportunity. Lance, I need you to cover for me while I read up on those exams. Let's see if I can't thwart their plans to ruin everything."
"You don't plan..." Hunk realised the plan.
"I do. You know how I feel for Allura, and she feels the same. I won't let old nobles that haven't done much to help this planet decide on something that only Allura should have the right to decide."
The others nodded and assured Keith their support. This would allow Keith to enter the exams, and they knew he wouldn't let anybody beat him.

For the next two weeks, Lance, Pidge and Hunk did their best to take over Keith's shifts where it wouldn't look too suspicious, letting him prepare for the exams. It helped that any competitor that wanted to participate would only submit his name the day of the exams themselves. Thus, nobody knew about his plans. Allura meanwhile was devastated by the council doing this to her. She didn't want to marry anybody that simply won some exams, who she didn't know at all.
The Force did their best to be there for her, trying to cheer her up and to make her not lose hope that things would work out in the end. It wasn't really successful. And Nanny, who was supportive of Allura finally marrying, no matter the way it happened, got to feel Allura's ire. And thanks to the self-defence training she had got, Allura didn't let Nanny manhandle her anymore.

Keith had a grin on his face. Oh, the old fools that were the members of the council of nobles would cry out in outrage, but he had checked all the laws and traditions on this procedure and there was nothing that could prevent that he participated in the exams. He had tried finding an exception to the law of Allura having to marry a prince for a long time now, and this was the perfect opportunity.
The tests that the competitors would have to face were all well within his capabilities. It included diplomacy, fighting abilities, strategy, politics and economy as the fields. As he had basically been Allura's right hand in rebuilding the planet, with Coran being her left, he knew much more than the average military commander about the leading of a planet. Well, in two days the games would begin and he wouldn't rest until he could finally marry his princess. Anybody else would rue the day they dared trying to enslave his woman to them.

Coran watched resigned how countless men put down their names for the chance to win the hand of Princess Allura. He didn't support the decision of the council, but his opinion hadn't been considered important. He feared that their princess would do something reckless. She was capable of running away and abdicating the throne.
He knew that her heart was already taken, and if not for the Arusian laws of her having to marry a prince, he would have given the two his blessing, like he knew King Alfor had long-since done. Honestly, Arus would be lucky to have a king like Keith.
Suddenly he looked up and couldn't hide his surprise at the man that put his name down. Well, everybody had the right to apply for the exams. Perhaps things wouldn't turn out as dire as he had feared.

Allura watched with empty eyes how the test proceeded. She didn't want to marry a stranger, she wanted Keith. But her council, a bunch of traitors as far as she was concerned, wouldn't hear a word about it. They only wanted power, which was shown by all of their sons that were old enough participating.
Thankfully the tests were hard and many failed and had to drop out. Nobody knew who was who in the exams, as every candidate was given a uniform and helmet, similar Voltron Force uniforms. Just the visor was different, you couldn't see through it. The thing that bothered her was that Keith couldn't be found anywhere. Only Lance, Hunk and Pidge were around, defending her from idiotic nobles that tried to impress upon her how good this would be for Arus.

It was decided. After three days of exams, the winner had been found. This man had trounced the competition, there was no other term for it. No opponent that had to go up against him directly could land a hit on him, his strategies in the scenarios baffled the proctors and his knowledge of politics and economy were astonishing. Now he kneeled in front of Princess Allura, still in his uniform, which prevented that he could be recognised, which was a condition for the trials of the Arusian Lions, simply to not have bias influence the results.
"Candidate, you won the exams and the right to marry our Princess," A noble declared, "Now is the time to reveal your identity to your future wife and people."
He raised his hands to the helmet and when it was taken off, Allura couldn't help but gasp at the very familiar face.
"Keith!"
"You didn't think I would simply let another man have you?"
Allura beamed and motioned Keith to rise. The nobles were clearly unhappy, but they couldn't do anything. Keith had been allowed to enter and he had won. Their plans had failed spectacularly and they could only watch annoyed how the future monarchs kissed to the cheers of the people that were watching the ceremony.

"What happened in here?" I ask, gingerly stepping into Keith's dorm room. The normally tidy space was littered with paper, clay, and other unidentifiable materials. "You trying to decorate for some kind of bizarre art supply themed fright night?"
Keith glares and growls at me. The sound is low, from deep in his throat, so I know he's past frustrated and rapidly approaching murderous rage. Normally I would heed the warning and flee, or at least refrain from moving closer to his hunched form, but today is the day before final projects are due in our art class and I'm dying to see what he's working on.
I've been coaching him through this class since it started, but he's been secretive about this project and my curiosity is piqued. I take another cautious step, attempting to avoid treading on anything that might be important (or covering something important), and try to catch a glimpse of his desk.
"Go away, Lance. I need to finish this and don't have time for your distractions. You know this counts as our final exam so I need to do well on it," he grunts without looking at me.
"C'mon, Keith... Let me see. Maybe I can help."
"It's not supposed to be a collaboration..." he mutters. Sighing, he sweeps an arm across the desk, sending art supplies flying. Crashing to the floor, they add to the disarray surrounding him.
I don't say anything. I'm just not sure what to say. His entire posture screams defeat; bowed head, slumped shoulders, blank stare. I've never seen him like this before. No matter how difficult the situation or class, he's always figured out a way to tackle the problem.
"I can't do this, Lance," he whispers. "So much for becoming a Captain and leading a team. At this rate, I'll be lucky just to graduate."
Crouching in the mess, I wait for him to look at me. "That's not true and you know it. There is no way you won't make Captain. Know why?"
"Why?" His resigned tone tells me that he's merely humoring me.
"Because you deserve it. This is one art class. You only need to pass it, not ace it. How much art do you expect to have to do on missions? Besides, with a team, you'll have someone else to do the drawing. You're good at utilizing the strengths of your team to get the desired outcome. You don't have to do everything yourself. You know that."
"Yeah, but what if I don't have the rest of the team to rely on?"
"Planning on being alone with the need to do a lot of drawing for yourself?"
He shakes his head, chuckling quietly. "You're right," he admits, his demeanor brightening. His gaze roams around the scattered remains of the failed artwork surrounding us. "So, still feel like helping me cobble something passable together?"
I smile and nod, relieved that I've been able to help him overcome his first crisis of command.
