"Are we there yet?"
"Shhh..." Keith waves the scanner around again. He's frowning. I know exactly what that means.
"So...lost in a blizzard, scanner is kaput, we're going to freeze to death and miss out on Shannon's berry pie."
"That's what I've always liked about you, Lance. Your sense of priorities and your boundless optimism."
"Whose idea was it to go snowboarding in a snowstorm, anyway?"
"It was four hours away when we left. And the idea, I might add, was yours."
"We need to find shelter. The wind is picking up."
Keith squints at the terrain. "We can brace our snowboards between those trees right over there for a wind break. C'mon."

Allura parts the drapes to watch the whiteout outside. "No sign of them...I think they're lost."
Hunk folds his arms. "The slopes aren't that far away. Bet they got disoriented. Heck, they could be within spitting distance and not know it with the visibility what it is right now."
"I hope they show up soon. It's freezing out there."
"I'll go take a look, Princess."
"And what if you get lost too?"
"Don't worry, I'll be fine." Hunk shrugs on a jacket and pockets a radio. Caro promises hot chocolate for everyone on his return. Hunk asks for extra marshmallows before he heads out. Allura turns to me.
"This trip may have been a bad idea, Shannon."
"Don't worry, Princess. Hunk found Cheddar when he wandered too far from the cabin yesterday. Lance and Keith are much bigger than that."
She nods absently and peeks through the curtains again to watch Hunk start his SUV and head down the driveway.

"Anything yet?"
"No. We'll have to wait until the wind dies down."
"We could freeze to death by then. The wind is crazy out here."
"Relax. The snow piling up windward of the snowboards is cutting back on what's actually reaching us. We can sit this out for a little bit."
The sudden crackle of static from the scanner startles us both. Keith opens the comm channel. "Hello? Anyone there?"
"Chief? Hey, it's me."
"Hunk! Am I glad to hear you...! Listen, Lance and I are stationary, can you get a fix on our position?"
"Yep, I gotcha. Be there in a bit."
Keith shuts off the scanner, pockets it. One minute later, we hear the approach of a vehicle coming in close. Keith twists around to blink at the headlights approaching us from behind.
"I'll be damned...!" he says with a shake of his head. We get to our feet in time to see Hunk opening the driver's side door of the SUV to step out and grin at us.
"You guys realize how close you were...?"
I yank the snowboards loose from the piled-on snow and stomp toward the auto. "Shut up and take us back to the cabin."
"No place like home," Keith says with a chuckle as we pile into the vehicle. Hunk heads back to the cabin.

Keith sat quietly, one gloved finger lightly tracing the surface of Black Lion's key as it rested in his palm. His eyes were unfocused, staring unseeingly at the object he held. A gentle breeze ruffled his hair, sending the black strands fluttering. He had no idea how much time had passed before a voice broke into his thoughts.
"There you are, Keith. Everyone's been looking for you. Allura got worried when you didn't report back to the control room after your patrol," Lance stated while taking a seat next to his captain. He frowned, took in Keith's serious demeanor. "Everything OK?"
Keith blinked, his eyes focusing again. "Yeah, Lance, everything's fine. I was just thinking, that's all," he replied, turning to face his friend. "I just needed to go somewhere quiet and away from the castle to sort some things out."
Lance nodded, leaning back against the Lion's leg and clasping his hands behind his head.
"I realized today that I no longer think of Earth as home and haven't for a while," Keith continued quietly, idly tracing patterns on the key he held.
"I hadn't really thought about it before, but I know what you mean. When I say or think of home now, it's always Arus I'm referring to, not Earth."
"It's more than that, Lance." Keith lifted his head, watched a few clouds drift by. "It's..." he broke off shaking his head. "Nevermind, it's not important."
Lance raised an eyebrow and studied Keith's back. "It's not a place, but a person, isn't it? A certain princess maybe? One with long blonde hair and big blue eyes, perhaps?"
Keith's head dropped, shaking slowly. "That obvious, huh?" he asked, without turning.
"Just because I know you as well as I do," Lance answered smirking. "So what are you going to do about it?"
"Nothing. What can I do about it? She's the princess, I'm her commander. It would just get too complicated, especially if things didn't work out."
"Or you could be denying yourself the best chance at happiness you'll ever get. I've seen how she looks at you when she thinks no one's looking; it's the same look I've seen from you. I don't think you have anything to worry about."
Keith turned, searched Lance's face. A small smile graced his lips as a weight seemed to lift from his shoulders. "Thanks, I guess I'd convinced myself that I'd just been seeing what I wanted to see." He chuckled softly, dropping his gaze to the key in his hand. "I don't know how you do it, Lance, but you always seem know when I need another perspective."
"It's a talent, what can I say?" he said, shrugging his shoulders and grinning. "So, now that we've determined how important I am to your life, maybe it's time you go tell Allura how important she is."
Keith bit his lip, holding back laughter and nodding. "Yeah, maybe you're right."
"Of course I am. C'mon, Keith. It's time to go home."

"...one last run, but everything looks clear." Keith's voice floated through castle control.
"Very good, Captain. We'll see you when you return home," Coran responded. Keith's face faded from the view screen as the connection was severed.
Coran pressed a series of buttons on the console before settling back in his seat and watching various scenes of Arus cycle across the monitor.
"I thought I heard Keith's voice," Allura said, disappointment coloring her tone as she entered the room and found Coran alone.
"You did. The captain just called in his final patrol report. He should be back shortly. I can reestablish the connection to the Black Lion if you wish to speak with him before he returns."
"No, that's alright, Coran. It's nothing important." She turned, quietly leaving the advisor to his scans.

"Lance, his patrol ended almost an hour ago. You don't think something happened to him do you?" Allura asked the Red Lion pilot, her eyes huge and damp.
"I'm sure he's fine, Princess. His last check in was an all-clear, wasn't it? If something big enough to cause him trouble had popped up since then, we'd know about it," he assured her softly, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. "Why are you so worried anyway?"
"It's... it's just not like him, or any of you, not to come right back after a patrol. That's all," she pointed out, her words coming in a rush as she refused to meet Lance's eyes with her own.
"Really? Because we've all gotten sidetracked after a patrol at some point or another and I don't remember you turning the castle upside down over it before. As a matter of fact, I seem to recall spending a couple of hours... Well, what I was doing isn't important. But I remember coming back more than two hours after my patrol ended and you hadn't even realized I was gone in the first place," he teased, amusement sparkling in his eyes. "Y'know," he continued, enjoying her discomfiture, "come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the only one you keep track of is Keith." He took a step back, cocking his head to one side, narrowing his eyes, and studying her. When he spoke again, his tone was serious, all hints of teasing gone. "Have you told him how you feel about him?"
"I don't kno-"
"Don't say you don't know what I'm talking about, Princess," he interrupted gently. "I can see it in your eyes. The question is, does he know?"
She shook her head slowly, her gaze riveted to the floor beneath her feet. "No, I haven't said anything to him," she whispered breathily. "Besides, he doesn't feel the same way about me."
Allura fled the room before he could react. "Just how blind can the two of them be?" Lance muttered quietly through a sigh. "Looks like I have work to do," he said as he made his way to castle control to begin his hunt for Keith.

Allura, the Crown Princess of Arus, was a virgin as pure as the spring-fed waters of a mountain stream. Her virtuous state was highly valued by nobles seeking matrimony, and passionately defended by her Voltron teammates against one evil prince with a litany of sexual conquests that put galactic pornography films to shame.
Allura was not privy to the details of Prince Lotor's sex life or any one else's, her guardians saw to that. Nor was she versed on the ways of love and romance, save for ceremonial niceties of arranged courtship. She was kept from gossip and compromising situations. Kept in the dark.
It was ironic then, that no one knew that when the lights were turned down in the castle at night, and the virginal future queen of Arus was tucked into her bed, she took her education into her own hands in the form of books.
A secret and voracious reader of romance novels- contraband smuggled in by one Yellow Lion pilot, the unlikeliest of cohorts- Allura imbibed this forbidden literature like a drunken sailor on a bender. They were an escape route into a world filled with what she longed for; love, sweet and intense; romance unfettered. The plots drew her in with encounters fueled by unresolved attraction, thrilled her with furtive, passionate embraces, and brought satisfaction with the discovery of sexual paradise created by true love.
But, as lovely as it was dwelling in a world of romantic delights, her brain did and could not completely shut out reality as she read. Suspension of disbelief oftentimes lagged, and she longed to discuss merits of the novels with someone else, someone who'd debate questions such as the likelihood of virgins having an earth shattering orgasm the first time, and men being able to perform no matter the time lapse between.
With a sigh, Allura picked up the package, delivered by a maid who was known for discretion. Unwrapping the plain brown paper, she drew out a book with a cover showing an embracing couple standing in a beautiful garden.
"Home is Where the Heart Is!" She read. "A lovely if clichéd title."
Opening the cover, she found a sticky note pressed to the title page.
"You're going to like this one, Hunkerdoodle! Steamy, sweet, and a virgin hero! Look forward to hearing your thoughts! Love, Sis (your favorite one)"
Allura closed the book. She was grinning. "So he's been reading them too!"
Was it a mistake the note had been left inside the book, or was it a message? Whatever it was, she had found a comrade for book talk. All she had to do was reach out.

Sven looked once again across the valley toward where Castle Pollux lay on the other side of the hills and smiled a bit, folding his arms. She had made this home dinner with his friends so... complete.
"How did you manage to get Keith here?" Lance asked, coming out of Sven's cabin. The princesses and Nanny were inside preparing to serve the dessert and coffee; Hunk, Pidge and Bandor had helped clear the table between courses, but Sven had to escape before he fell under the pressure of so many people and noise. Those months of solitude on Planet Doom had changed him; Romelle understood and was helping him conquer those fears.
"Princess Allura," he said. "She's the only one who could convince him to take some time off."
"And why did you bring Nanny, that's the other question," Lance said grumpily as Keith joined them.
"She's the best cook in this galaxy," he replied. "And she wanted to help."
"No, she wanted to be Princess' chaperone," Lance protested. "To make sure we behave ourselves."
"Maybe you should try it," Sven suggested. "Instead of running after every girl that comes your way."
"He's right, you know," Keith said dryly.
"Shut up," Lance said indignantly. "You're glad the old girl came along so you don't have to spend time alone with the Princess. Sometimes I wonder what she sees in you."
Keith lifted an eyebrow. "And I wonder the same about Farla, you keep telling her that you'll come back to Lyra."
Lance glared at him for a moment and then looked away across the field filled with grapevines. Keith sighed, squinting at the stars, especially Planet Arus that kept him rooted there with love and honor.
The night made them resemble each other, robbing them of their colors and leaving three tall men with broad shoulders and proud posture who could be mistaken for each other in the shadows. They had their differences though, so that someone who loved a man should be able to pick his form out in the dark. Sven didn't think of that, and when a hand slipped under his tunic, he whipped around and shoved Lance, who was nearest, as hard as he could.
"Sven, what's wrong with you?" he snapped.
"Lance," Keith warned him.
"Sorry," he said, pulling Romelle into his arms. "I was startled."
"I'm sorry," she whispered huskily, pressing against him. "I just came to tell you that dessert is ready."
Sven rested his hands on Romelle's shoulders. Keith and Lance glanced briefly to that intimate gesture and then away, as if escaping from a hurt. And it occurred to him that he was the only one who had a person to love and cherish openly. She was his home.
"Vell, let's go get dessert," Sven said warmly to them. He was ready to be done with this dinner, so he could spend time alone with his princess and perhaps together find a way to help their friends get their own homes.

The room was dark, the inhabitants silent as they watched the projection of a flickering image. A sweet-looking girl was wearing a checkered blue and white dress; she closed her eyes, clicked her ruby-red slippers thrice, and began to chant, "There's no place like home. There's no place like home. There's no place like home..."
The air swirled around the girl, a spell spoken by a nearby woman who claimed to be a witch. However, this particular detail had been hotly debated when she first appeared in the transmission; Hagar insisted that no respectable witch would be caught dead in a pink dress covered in ruffles.
Of course, what really mattered was the message finally came to a close and the lights in the room began to glow brighter until its occupants could all see one another clearly.
Zarkon looked to Hagar. "Why is this the first we're hearing of these powerful Terran witches?"
Sighing, the old woman shook her head. "I already told you, Sire. That woman is no witch!"
"What I want to know," Lotor chimed in, "is where we get those magical red shoes! We could travel anywhere with a pair of those!"
Commander Cossack nudged the Prince's ribs and whispered. "You should find out if they have magical red boots. I hear high-heels are bad for your arches."
"Hagar!" Lotor demanded. "I need answers now!"
The old witch studied the floor near her feet and rubbed at her temples. "Cossack?" She finally spoke. "Tell me again where you got these 'transmissions' and what the other messages say."
Both the King and Prince of Doom paid rapt attention to their usually foolish commander as he spoke with obvious pride.
"Yes, of course, mistress Hagar." Cossack bowed deeply. "They were part of a convoy delivering goods to the space explorers on Arus. There were many different messages, some seemed to be stories of woe, some tales of love and romance. Several seemed to be some sort of instructional videos on how to capture villainous criminals while disguised as a bat-man." He paused long enough to lift a small box into the air and give it a shake in the witch's direction. "But I knew this one was important because in the beginning, there is a giant lion's head and he's roaring. I knew it was a secret message for the Voltron Force."
The men started to once again hotly debate the information and secret weapons they believed they had uncovered and the old woman shook her head once more...how many times did she have to explain to these morons the Terrans love of frivolity and their constant need for entertainment?
And, this is why we can't win the war...

Meanwhile on Planet Arus...
"I don't know, Princess," Lance looked confused. "We ordered all those films from 'Movies'R'Us' nearly two months ago...They should have been here by now."
"Hmm," Allura replied. "I guess they got lost in space."
