It was the third week of December and the people of Arus prepared for Christmas. The celebration was something Arus and Earth had in common, as settlers from Earth that had moved to Arus centuries ago had brought the tradition with them and it had spread.
In the Castle of Lions two young children watched while their father put up four socks at the front of the fireplace.
"Daddy, are the socks large enough?" asked a small blond girl with two pigtails.
"They are, Sia, there is more than enough space for Father Christmas to put sweeties in there," assured the black-haired father his daughter with a smile on his face.
"Daddy, can we decorate the Christmas tree? I want to put gingerbread figures in there," asked the black-haired boy, who seemed to be two years older than his sister.
"We will wait for your mother. She wanted to be here when we decorate the tree, remember, Rick?" asked the father.
"But she is busy with the meeting. And Coran and Nanny always keep her there for ages!" complained Rick.
"Can't Mummy get a vacation for Christmas?" asked Sia.
"She will have a few free days for the holidays, but she is the queen of Arus. That comes with a lot of responsibility," explained their father patiently, "Now, how about we eat some gingerbread stars while I tell you a story until your Mummy joins us?"
The children nodded eagerly and got some gingerbread stars. The father started telling a story about a beautiful princess who was threatened by an evil prince that had decided he would have her as his bride and no other. The princess was very brave though and didn't give into the attempts of the prince to capture her, next to attacking her kingdom over and over again, to force her to capitulate. He told how a brave knight appeared one day in the princess' kingdom and helped her defend her country and her people and how they fell in love with each other. He told of exciting battles and difficult situations that the princess and the knight had to master before they had their happy end and married and lived happily ever after.
When he ended the story, the door opened, and a beautiful blond woman entered the room.
"Mummy!" exclaimed the children.
"Now we can decorate the tree!" cheered Rick.
"Sorry it took so long," she apologised, "but now I can help you with the tree."
The children nodded and soon the tree was filled with different kinds of decoration. From baubles and straw stars to gingerbread figures and golden bells. The candles were the electric kind as it was much safer, especially with children. In the end, the family of four was happy with how it looked like.
"I'm so happy, Keith," said Allura, "This is like my personal fairy tale ending."
He kissed her cheek.
"Mine too, Allura. This is what Christmas should be about. Family enjoying it together," agreed Keith.
Sia and Rick started to sing some of their favourite Christmas sings and their parents joined them.

As we crested the ridge, the cabin finally came into sight. A curling tendril of smoke rising from the chimney promised a warm, crackling fireplace waiting to thaw frozen limbs. I couldn't stop a smile from pulling at my lips and the relieved sigh Lance expelled into the chill air told me that he was thinking the same thing. Wordlessly, we picked up our pace a bit, eager to cover the remaining distance as quickly as possible.
Moments later, we'd reached our objective and entered the small building where we were greeted by our teammates and the overpowering odor of something that smelled almost, but not quite, like hot pumpkin spice. Lance immediately turned and fled the space, and out of the corner of my eye I could see him kneeling in the snow gasping in one deep lungful of the cold crisp air after another. I only hoped he'd been fast enough to ward off the migraines that usually followed exposure to similar smells.
Pidge and Hunk shrugged and quickly left the cabin to see to their ailing friend. I watched them go, then turned my attention to Allura. Her mouth was pulled into a frown, her brows wrinkled in confusion. The anger and frustration I'd first felt upon entering the room dissipated instantly under her questioning gaze. I gently guided her to a seat near the fireplace and sat next to her. "Lance is sensitive to certain scents. Things like musks and strong spices tend to trigger migraines and pumpkin spice is one of the smells that bothers him the most," I told her calmly.
Her frown deepened as she looked from me to the room around us in confusion. "I don't understand, Keith. There isn't anything pumpkin spice here. There aren't even any pumpkins on Arus."
"Then what am I smelling now?" I asked as I inhaled another lungful.
"I put some Arusian clover blooms in with the firewood. I thought it would give the cabin more of a cozy atmosphere."
"Well, it smells almost exactly like pumpkin spice and Lance isn't going to be able to come back inside until we get rid of it."
A look of horror crossed her face and nearly broke my heart. One innocent little mistake and our team getaway has turned into a potential nightmare. Eager to erase that look from her face, and of course ease my best friend's suffering, I formulated a plan.
"Don't worry, Princess, we can fix this. You open all the windows while I put out the fire and take the remaining wood and clover outside and dump it far away from the cabin. We can start a new fire without any additives and within an hour or so, everything will be fine," I assured her.
"Lance is going to hate me for this, isn't he?"
"No, he'll understand. He knows you didn't do this on purpose. Just know, 'pumpkin spice by any other name still makes Lance sick,'" I tell her with a smile.
