Proud parents watched their little boy lean close to the plump man in the bright red suit and whisper furiously in his ear. They couldn't hear the exchange, but knew the moment when the jolly old elf asked that age old question, "have you been a good boy this year?"
Their son's bright blue eyes widened and his tiny hand came up to cover the "o" shape his mouth now made.
"You do the same thing when you're about to tell a fib."
"I do not!" Lovely eyes widened as she reached up to hide her lips; she caught herself just in time and playfully slapped her husband's arm while they both laughed.
"Your Highnesses, please, come have your picture taken with us!" Santa gestured, waving the royal couple over to where he sat.
"Did he tell you he's been a little bit naughty, Mr. Claus?" Keith asked as he neared the older gentleman.
"Ho, ho... now what is this? I thought you said you were a good boy?"
"I was!" The lad glared at his father before turning a tearful pout onto Santa. "It was Uncle Lance who threw the ball through the kitchen window... and Uncle Pidge said it was okay to put a thumbtack on Nanny's chair..."
"Well, now... It sounds to me that Lance and Pidge should be getting lumps of coal this Christmas!"
At the little prince's enthusiastic nod, everyone laughed.
"Okay," Santa said, patting the lad's head and handing him a candy cane. "Run along now and be a good boy!"
"See what I got!" As if it were the greatest of treasures, the little boy held the red and white striped confection up for his parents to inspect.
"Wow, look at that!" The King's smile was filled with tenderness as he watched his wife scoop their son into her arms and kiss his rosy cheek.
"Can I have it now?"
"Hmm…" His mother seemed to consider the question in a most serious fashion. "I suppose, but after this, no more sweets today - I know your Uncle Hunk gave you a gingerbread man this morning."
"Okay," the prince nodded, his black curls bouncing about, as unruly as his father's, and his sky colored eyes as bright as his mother's.
Allura giggled, the sound like the tinkling of bells, as Keith wrapped his arms about them both and pretended to take a bite out of their son's peppermint treat.
Only a few feet away, Santa stood, watching the scene unfold. Mrs. Claus stepped in close and spoke in a quiet voice.
"The Prince was the last of the children, Coran. Those hooligans, Lance, Hunk and Pidge, will be helping with-"
A hand placed gently upon her arm stopped her mid-sentence. Looking up, she saw the tears sparkling in Santa's eyes.
"What is it, Coran? What's wrong?"
"Nothing is wrong," he indicated the royal family. "For the first time in decades, everything is right."

After our meeting with Avok and Bandor, Sven had taken my arm to lead me outside the castle because he had something important to show me. I had refused to move. It was the perfect time to introduce Sven to the custom of issuing invitations instead of orders.
"Don't you ever get bored with bossing me around?"
"Excuse me?"
"You should have asked me whether I wanted to go with you."
He released me immediately. "Sorry, Romelle," he added easily, "How about lunch? My place?"
"Yes," I murmured, secretly pleased with visiting his home for the first time.
It was a Christmas wonderland! A luxuriant tree stood in the living room, decorated with lights, a garland made of red and white paper hearts, red and white glass ornaments and icicles. The staircase railing was adorned with ribbon printed with red Christmas trees.
"Vell, what do you think?"
I was surprised by the wariness on his face, almost like a suitor anticipating a rejection from his beloved. But of course I was being fanciful. My opinion was of no importance to Sven except in a royal sense. He wanted me to convince Avok to send him to Terra as Pollux's ambassador.
Lately he seemed so eager to return to his planet, I thought sadly.
Even so, the decorations were beautiful. But since Sven and I had been getting along so well, I thought it safe to tease him slightly. "I believed Keith was the only one obsessed with red and white."
"Nonsense," he said in a crushing tone. "Scandinavian decorations are supposed to transmit harmony and tranquility, and that's achieved using these colors."
I felt as though I had been run over by a robeast.
"Oh, you were kidding me, weren't you?" His words were contrite. "Forgive me."
"Your decorations are beautiful. Everything is perfect." Then taking in the self-satisfied expression on his face, I added, "The only thing missing are the candy canes."
"Easily fixed," he smiled, returning with a box of the candy.
As we put them on the tree I asked, "Why do you want to go back to Terra?"
He frowned. "I don't want to go back; I want to take you there as soon as possible."
"Pardon?"
Sven left the box and gathered me his arms. "I want my family to meet the woman I love. And what perfect occasion that Christmas…"
"What did you say?"
"I said, 'the woman I love…' " He paused, and then looked down at me. "You."
"I love you, Sven."
"Romelle!"
His mouth covered mine, his arms so tight around me I thought my ribs might be in danger of breaking, but then I was kissing him back with the same eagerness. Murmuring my name, he swung me into his arms. "I intend to make love to you until the moon rises. And then…"
"What?" I said breathlessly.
He grinned. "I expect you to place the rest of the candy canes on our tree."

"Keith, could you tell me what this red and white striped confection is?"
"It's a candy cane, Princess. It's a Christmas tradition in some places on Earth, usually something Santa Claus gives away to children."
"Candy shaped like a cane...how cute! Is it sweet?"
"Yeah, sorta. Red and white usually means it has a peppermint flavor."
"How lovely! So how would I eat it?"
"Um...er..."
"Keith? Is something wrong?"
"Not at all."
"Are you sure?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Because you're all red and not answering my question."
"I was thinking of how to explain...uh, I guess the best way is to lick and suck it."
"I see. Start at the tip and work my way to the curved end?"
"Uh, yeah. Yeah. Th-that's the usual method."
"Mmmmm, that's good! Mmm, so fresh and smooth tasting...I can't stop licking..."
"That's... really nice, Princess. Perhaps we should talk about something else now."
"Huh? Oh, all right. You know, Lance told me that he has kisses that taste like chocolate, and I should sample them some time. Isn't that silly?"
"WHAT? I mean, yeah, totally silly! Hey look, it's snowing outside...let's go check it out!"

He awoke to the smell of peppermint wafting through the air. Eyes closed, he breathed in deeply, savoring the aroma. Stretching languorously, he yawned widely and turned in his bed, snuggling deeper beneath the blankets. Burying his face in the pillow, he attempted to drift off to sleep again, perhaps to dream of candy canes and laughter.
He had barely stilled before the scent of chocolate assaulted his nose, the aroma so strong he practically tasted it melting on his tongue. Reluctantly, he abandoned any further thoughts of sleep, rolled over, and slowly opened his eyes. His lips curved into a broad grin at the sight of his wife holding a mug nearly overflowing with whipped cream, a candy cane peeking from the white froth. She returned his smile, handing it to him before reaching up to adjust the floppy red cap adorning her head.
"Merry Christmas," she said softly, her eyes sparkling as she watched him sip the steaming confection. She grinned, reaching out to wipe a smear of whipped cream from his lips. He swallowed hard, nearly spilling his drink as she licked the sweet cream from her fingers. Quickly placing the mug on the bedside table, he turned his attention back to his wife, pulling her close and kissing her lustily. When he finally released her, she licked her lips, savoring the remaining hint of minty chocolate from his kiss.
"Merry Chri-," he replied, stopping abruptly and cocking his head to look at her quizzically. "Allura? Umm… It's not Christmas."
"I know," she answered, eyes dancing with mischief. "But, Arus doesn't have Christmas, it's not your birthday, and I have something for you."
He raised one eyebrow, regarding her quizzically for a moment before letting his eyes sweep the room they shared, searching for anything different or out of place. Seeing nothing, he turned to his wife, waiting for her to continue.
She looked from his expectant face to his unfinished drink and back again. He turned to see what had distracted her and saw the mug sitting on the nightstand, the rich brown liquid cooling, the whipped cream a layer of melted foam, the candy cane gone completely. He picked it up and in one long draught of the lukewarm chocolate, drained half of the remaining beverage. "So, what's the big Christmas surprise?"
She shook her head, grinning. "Keep drinking," she instructed, indicating the mug cradled between his palms.
He eyed her cautiously, finishing in a few rapid swallows. He reached out to place the now empty mug on the nightstand, but she stopped him. Pressing his free hand over the top of the mug, she slowly upended it. Her hands on his were all that saved the mug from falling to the floor when the words printed on its bottom came into view. His face registered shock followed by joy, his eyes rising to meet hers. Her smile reflected his happiness as she leaned in to whisper, "Congratulations, Daddy," before meeting him in a kiss.
