"What on Arus is that smell?" Keith asked as he walked into the room.
"Fruitcake," Lance answered flatly. "Well, it was a fruitcake. Now it's another log in the fireplace."
"Do I even want to know?" the commander continued, wrinkling his nose.
Lance shrugged. "It was pretty funny actually. Now that Pidge is officially Arusian, he's been petitioning Princess Allura to add some Baltan traditions and holidays to the calendar. Hunk got wind of it and decided that Earth shouldn't be left out just because it hasn't been blown to smithereens. They managed to wear her down enough that she agreed to give them one day to share if they could find a way to blend the holidays together."
Keith blinked and sat heavily on the couch. His mouth opened and closed a few times, but his brain couldn't find the words to form coherent questions. Lance chuckled and took his captain's silence as a cue to continue.
"Well, long story short, I'm not sure exactly how many holidays they tried to mash together, or which ones they considered. What I do know is that Hunk managed to get his hands on a fruitcake, though as you can smell, it wasn't a traditional Earth variety. He convinced Allura to taste it, but after one nibble she tossed the rest into the fireplace."
"If it tasted anything like that smell, I'm surprised she agreed to taste it and didn't just get rid of it."
Lance smirked. "I think that was her original intention, but Hunk made puppy dog eyes at her and she gave in. I can't be sure that she actually ate any of it."
"Probably for the best."
"Y'know... Allura can be quick when she wants to be." Lance paused for a moment. "Until I saw her swipe the rest of the fruitcake from his hands and toss it into the fire, I wouldn't have believed that she could move that fast. Looks like that extra judo training you've been giving her has been doing wonders for her reflexes," Lance continued blandly, one eyebrow raised.
Keith just nodded slowly, refusing to take his second's bait. "So where are they now?"
"No idea. He called her a vixen and chased her out of the room. I'm surprised they didn't run you over in the hallway."
"Musta gone the other way," he said with a shrug. "Guess I better go find them and make sure nobody gets hurt and leaves us a lion short."
"I'll go with you. You might need an extra pair of hands to hold Hunk back."
Keith snorted. "Uh-huh. You just want an excuse to get away from the smell in here."
"As if you weren't doing the same thing."
"How about we just forget them both and go for a swim instead?"
"That, o wise commander, sounds like a great idea. Last one in the lake has to taste Hunk's next fruitcake," Lance yelled as he sprinted from the room, Keith hot on his heels.

It was Christmas morning on Planet Drule and after having breakfast we had opened our gifts while sitting in front of the fireplace. The aroma of chocolate and vanilla drifted from a tin can of home-baked cookies. But I preferred the light scent of orange blossoms of Lisa in my arms.
"I can't believe you sent an express shuttle to Earth to get a care package from my folks."
I shrugged, pleased at the success of my gesture. "I knew you were missing home."
She smiled and kissed me softly. "Thank you."
I lay with the quilt spilling off my shoulders as I watched her rummage through the package and took out two stockings. One looked somewhat worn with use, had a reindeer made out of felt and her name embroidered in gold thread. The other looked brand new.
"It's for you."
I blinked. "For me?"
My name was embroidered with the same loving care.
"Hazar?"

"You certainly made a good impression with mom."
He blinked again, and kept his lashes lowered, his face blushing as he struggled with the surprise. I kissed him on the cheek, giving him time to deal with thoughts of celebrating Christmas for the first time and being welcomed by my family.
His lashes lifted again, and his red eyes watched me closely as I unwrapped the gift he'd put under the tree to reveal a small wooden box with floral carvings, my eyes widening when it opened to reveal a delicate platinum Y-necklace, at its tip a heart. A small, exquisite heart made of jade. Like the vibrant emerald-green gem he wore in his circlet.
"Hazar, it's beautiful."
He watched me fasten the necklace so that the heart draped at the V of my flannel nightgown.
"I wonder if your study of my kind has told you what we just did," he murmured and frowned. "I fear I have taken advantage of you."
"How so?"
"I will not hold you to it, Lisa, since you do not know, but that, you wearing that necklace and I this circlet is symbolic of the exchange of vows among us Drules."
"What?"

I nodded, holding her liquid gaze with my own. "I never thought I would find love, Lisa."
Damn. She was going to cry. She was definitely going to cry.
She tried not to sniffle. "So you're saying that by this simple act we became one."
"Yes, but-"
She cupped my face with both hands. "Well, then you're forgiven."
I let out a long breath. "I love you, Lisa. Never doubt it."
"And I love you, Hazar."
She then gave me a stern look that made me want to kiss her in the worst way. "But I warn you, by giving me this necklace you now belong to me... completely."
"Indeed."
"Wipe that smirk from your face; you don't know what I'm planning for you."
"Who says I do not?"
A smile quirked at the corner of her mouth.
Yes, I loved spending Christmas with Lisa.

Allura eyed the rectangular-shaped confection Keith placed on the table. Every Christmas he managed to come up with a different tradition or observance from Earth that surprised and delighted her. Now was no different as she tilted her head this way and that to examine the treat from all sides. It looked like bread, and yet not. She smiled at Keith as he adjusted the Santa hat he wore. Cute, she thought. Then she studied the bread-like thing again.
"What is it?"
"This is called fruitcake, Princess," Keith replied and prepared to cut a piece.
Lance, who had been watching nearby in grim silence up until now, added "And it's one of the most lethal substances known to man."
Allura glanced at Lance as Keith handed her a slice on a small plate. She trusted Keith. She knew he would never offer her something inedible. But Lance's expression and tone of voice gave her pause. She looked at Keith, who shook his head.
"Fruitcake is the most maligned dessert in the history of baked goods. Too many poorly made versions have given it a bad rep."
"They've found that stuff in Ancient Rome," Lance retorted. "It's been discovered in Egyptian tombs. It's probably what they used to preserve mummies."
"Only if you have the kind with dyed candied fruit and full of sugar and preservatives", Keith replied. "The real thing is made of buttery batter laced with dried fruit and toasted nuts and doused with rum. It's amazing."
"Amazing is surviving a slice of that stuff," Lance said with a smirk.
Keith sighed. "I am trying to share some holiday culture with Allura. Do you mind?"
Allura laughed to herself as she listened to the two men argue. She'd already sampled some of the slice Keith gave her and, as it turned out, he was right after all. The fruitcake was tasty, and it made her belly warm with every bite. She nibbled it absently as they went on.
Lance folded his arms. "As a matter of fact, I do mind. Nobody should be made subject to fruitcake. They found one among the supplies from Scott's expedition to the South Pole. It was over a hundred years old."
"Lance..."
"You know what? I think they've got one giant fruitcake hidden in the Andes and that's what they cut down to distribute each year."
"Lance, for crying out loud...!"
"Hunk won't even eat fruitcake. What does that tell you?"
Allura finished her last bite and set the plate down. She felt giddy and the silly banter made her giggle, then hiccup. Keith and Lance both looked at her.
"You two are soooo silly!" she declared, then she eyed Keith and his cute Santa hat. She wanted to hug him. So she did. And then she kissed the end of his nose. Keith blushed furiously. It was cute. She kissed his nose again.
Lance tilted his head. "You might have a bit too much rum in that."
"Shut up, Lance," Keith growled.
"What is it?"

Hunk looked over the preparations he had made. It hadn't been easy to get everything he needed, but he had managed. He would have to substitute some parts, as they weren't readily available on Arus, but it wouldn't negatively influence the end-result. Thankfully, Nanny was away, checking on some suppliers for the castle, which meant she wouldn't find him doing this and interfering.
"This will be a wonderful surprise for everybody," Hunk contently told himself and then set to work.

The whole Voltron Force was assembled in the recreation room, on request of Hunk. They had had a long week and were hopeful for some down time, but Hunk had been firm that it wasn't anything bad and that they would like it. Thus, they were all waiting for him to appear.
"Wonder what Hunk is up to?" Lance mentioned.
"He was very secretive about it," Pidge added, "I couldn't find out anything."
"I'm sure he has a nice surprise for us all," Allura commented with a smile.
Keith nodded, but didn't add his comment. Then the door opened and Hunk pushed a serving table into the room, with the things on top of it being covered by a white cloth.
"Thank you all for waiting," Hunk greeted them.
"So, what is your surprise?" Keith asked.
"Well, you might not have kept track of things, what with us all being so busy, but it is close to Christmas on Earth," Hunk announced.
"Really? I totally lost track of time," Lance exclaimed.
"Me too. I can't believe it, I nearly missed Christmas!" Pidge was aghast.
"That's this really big celebration on Earth, right?" Allura asked.
"Yes. It's celebrated all over the planet," Keith confirmed, "Thank you for reminding us, Hunk."
"No prob. To let us all share a bit of Christmas cheer, even if we are far away from home, I have prepared a few things."
He pulled the cloth from the table and revealed several different things that were traditional treats for the Christmas period.
"I have fruitcake, different biscuits, oranges, apples, nuts, cinnamon stars, gingerbread hearts, hot chocolate and tea. I thought we could have a small Christmas party just for the Voltron Force," Hunk told them.
"That's a wonderful surprise, Hunk, thank you," Keith said with a bright smile on his face.
"Yes, thank you, Hunk!" Pidge enthusiastically agreed and Lance added his thanks.
Hunk started placing the things he had brought onto the table of the room and everybody started serving themselves. The men explained the tradition of Christmas to Allura and they all enjoyed the treats that Hunk had prepared, praising him for how good they were. After a while, they switched to telling stories of Christmases in the past that they had spent on Earth. It was a wonderful way to take a break from the war they were constantly fighting. Allura also learned more about her dear friends and was happy to be included in this.

This had to be the worst snow storm since he had come to Arus. They had had lots of different types of weather, including snow, but a heavy snowstorm like this was new. And it was natural, not caused by a new robeast from Lotor and Haggar. They had checked. After the one that dried out Planet Arus, a snow monster wasn't too farfetched as the cause.
The storm had cut off the villages and towns that the Arusians had managed to rebuild from electricity and supplies, therefore the Voltron Force had decided to deliver care packages after three days of the storm burying everything under a thick layer of snow.
"Keith, can you hear me?" Allura's voice came from the communicator on his belt.
"I can hear you Princess," He confirmed.
"I'm done with my deliveries and back on the way to Blue Lion, but I can't see much in this storm."
"We will return to the castle soon. I'm done with the last house on my list as well. I can't wait to warm up in front of a fireplace."
"That sounds great. Hopefully Nanny has some hot chocolate too. I could use it."
"Great idea. I'll go back to Black Lion now."
He put the communicator back to his belt and waded through the deep snow to his lion. He wished he could have landed it closer to the houses, but the lion was simply too big for that, especially as sight was basically non-existent and he had to rely on sensors. Carrying the packages to the houses had been hard, even for somebody well-trained like him.
Finally, he reached his lion and he was glad that he had let the lion lie down instead of the normal sitting position. He would never have managed to jump up to the head with the wind howling like it did. It was hard enough this way. A look at the sensors told him that Blue Lion was active and ready to take off.
He entered his key and Black Lion sat up. He took off, Blue Lion following him. Hopefully, the weather would calm down soon.

Nanny frowned seeing the scene in front of her. Thanks to electricity at most of the castle failing, and Hunk and Pidge being unable to repair it until the morning, when they would have enough light for it, the inhabitants of the castle had assembled in the few rooms that had fireplaces. And right now, Princess Allura was asleep on the shoulder of Keith, both being wrapped into a blanket on the couch. It was totally inappropriate, but she was loath to wake the girl. She had worked hard all day, delivering needed supplies to her people. And her room didn't have a fireplace. She would let it slide just this once, but she would remind Keith that the Princess was taboo for him. She would marry a prince. Not a commoner like the commander of the Voltron Force.
